Proclamations

Proclamation Guidelines

The Mayor may issue proclamations to recognize outstanding accomplishments or noteworthy occasions and/or organizations in Missoula upon residents' requests.  Requests are considered on a case-by-case basis subject to their significance to the city and its residents.

Proclamations are ceremonial and do not carry any legislative or legal value.

Common Proclamation Requests include:

  • Citywide events
  • Recognition of cultural or ethnic groups
  • Recognition of an organization or business
  • Recognition of special occasions and milestones
  • All must be requested by a local resident

Submitting a request does not guarantee a proclamation will occur. Proclamations are at the discretion of the Mayor who reserves the right to approve, edit, or deny any request. Proclamations should not set the policy direction of council.

How to submit a proclamation request:

Fill out our proclamation request form.  Please submit your request as early as possible. We require a minimum of two weeks prior to the date your proclamation is needed to allow time for processing, but would appreciate more time.

Requests for proclamations must be submitted with a draft of no more than five “Whereas” statements as it will assist staff in the creation of the proclamation.  See previous Proclamations below for example wording.

If your request for a proclamation is accepted, you will be notified when it is ready to be picked up at City Hall.
