- The City does not accept unsolicited applications. When vacancies occur, they are posted on the City's website. Job postings may have a firm closing date, or an open until filled with a priority screening date. It is in the applicant’s best interest to apply by the priority screening date when listed.
- Job postings will list specifics regarding additional information necessary to apply. Such items may include supplemental questions, cover letters, transcripts & other documents needing to be attached to the application. Incomplete applications, late or missing application materials, may not be considered.
- All applications are first screened to ensure they are complete. Managers will receive all complete applications to review. Due to a high volume of interested and qualified applicants, not all minimally qualified applicants will be interviewed. Only the most qualified candidates will be offered an interview. The City of Missoula conducts interviews with multiple panel members.
- Reference checks will be conducted prior to any offer of employment. If a position requires a criminal background check, driving record check and/or pre-employment drug test, as stated in the job posting, candidates will be offered a contingent offer of employment. A firm offer will only be made if the top candidate successfully passes the required test(s).
- All applicants will be notified by email regarding their status.

The Veteran's Public Employment Preference Act and the Persons with Disabilities Public Employment Preference Act provide preference in public employment for certain military veterans and people with disabilities or their eligible relatives. Applicants wanting to claim either veterans or disability preference must provide the appropriate documentation of eligibility with the application. The required documentation may include a DD-214 showing the discharge status; a document issued by the Office of the Adjutant General of the Montana National Guard certifying service; or a PHHS Certifications of Disability form.
