Jim Nugent attended the University of Montana where he first obtained a degree in business finance before earning a J.D. from the University of Montana Law School. Jim started his career with the Missoula City Attorney’s Office as a criminal prosecutor in June, 1975, and assumed his current role as the Missoula City Attorney in May, 1977.
In addition to his many years of service with the Missoula City Attorney’s Office, Jim has also twice been president of the Montana League of Cities and Towns and several times president of the Montana City Attorney’s Association. Jim currently holds a position on the MMIA Board of Directors and was formerly a chairperson on their Board of Directors. In 2011, Jim was honored with the Bousliman Professionalism Award which is an award named for George L. Bousliman, former State Bar executive director, and honors its recipients’ outstanding accomplishments as lawyers.
In his free time Jim enjoys attending sporting events, taking advantage of all of the outdoor activities Missoula has to offer and catching productions at the Missoula Community Theater. Most importantly Jim enjoys spending time with his wife Janice, their five children Jim, Anna, Erin, Mike, and John, and his four grandchildren.
