Description: Replacing 1,870 lineal feet of 6-inch Kalamein water main pipe between Orange St and Oak St that was originally installed in 1914. Missoula Water is coordinating this work with the Storm Water Utility and Street Maintenance Division to improve storm water infrastructure, install Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ramps, and mill and overlay the full width of 3rd St. Water services will be replaced from the water main to the curb box.

  • Work will start at Orange St. and move west. Portions of 3rd St. will be closed during construction, usually one or two blocks at a time.
  • Please see detour maps link below for detour routes and tentative construction schedule dates.
  • Streets will reopen to local traffic once water main is installed. Please drive slowly and watch for potentially rough, patched areas.
  • After main installation, crews will begin replacing services lines to individual buildings. The new service lines run from the new main to the property owner’s curb box.
  • ADA ramp installation work may be moving forward at the same time but will not impact traffic or construction work.
  • All of 3rd St. from Orange St. to Ash St. will be repaved curb to curb once all water main and service line work is done.

Project Dates:  Scheduled to begin Monday, April 27, 2020, with completion anticipated to be in late July. These dates are subject to change due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances.

E. Pine Street Water Main Replacement – COMPLETED

Description:  Construction on this project involves replacing approximately 3 blocks of 12-inch Kalamein pipe installed in Pine and Jefferson streets in 1914. The 12-inch main in E. Pine St. will be replaced with a 24-inch main, which gives Missoula Water better east-west transmission capacity in this area.

  • Work in E. Pine St. runs from Adams St. to Madison St.
  • On Jefferson St., work will run from E. Pine St. to Spruce St.
  • This project also includes performing service line swaps on the 500 block of E. Spruce St. to eliminate a 6-inch main dating back to 1914 by connecting them to a newer main already in the street.

Project Dates:  Scheduled to begin August 10, 2020, with completion expected around the end of October. These dates are subject to change due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances.

SEWER PROJECTS

University Sewer Force Main Replacement Project — COMPLETED

Maurice Ave. between 5th St. and 6th St.

Description:  Replacing about 800 feet of 6-inch ductile iron pipe, installed in 1960, with 8-inch PVC pipe. The larger pipe will increase the capacity of the University Lift Station to accommodate increased incoming sewer flows, especially those experienced during University of Montana football games. Currently, wastewater collections staff must carefully monitor flows during each game and be prepared with on-site vacuum trucks in case a pump fails. Traffic will be detoured around the work area, and the public is encouraged to take an alternate route.

  • The parking lot on the north end of Maurice Ave. will close on Friday, June 12, and will remain closed throughout the project.
  • The bicycle lane on 5th St. will remain open to traffic.
  • The ramp to the Kim Williams Trail north of 5th St. with be detoured beginning June 18 and will remain closed for the duration of the project. See link to trail detour map below.
  • Maurice Ave. will be closed between 5th St. and 6th St. starting June 23 and will remain closed for the duration of the project. See link to project detour map below.
  • Traffic on 6th St. will be shut down for night work from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on June 30. See detour map below.
  • Expect night work on July 6 at the north end of the Maurice Ave. parking lot while crews connect the new force main to the old one. Bypass pumping is needed and will be completed at night when sewage levels are low.
  • Once paving begins on 5th and 6th streets, expect brief traffic interruptions and watch for detours.

Project Dates:  Scheduled to begin Monday, June 15, 2020, with completion anticipated to be July 10. These dates are subject to change due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances.
