The League of Women Voters (LWV) is hosting this webinar to provide information about the process for defining representative and senate districts for the Montana state legislature. Redistricting occurs every 10 years to determine 100 state representative districts and 50 state senate districts. Population shifts within the state require redrawing the lines for districts to ensure equal populations within districts.
Thanks to Montana’s 1972 Constitution, Montana is among the few states with an Independent Redistricting Commission governed by strong transparency and open meeting laws. The Commission will hold hearings and receive testimony from the public throughout 2022 before adopting Montana’s maps early in 2023. The new districts take effect for the 2024 state legislature election.
The LWV People Powered Fair Maps Campaign seeks to ensure that communities are fairly represented as new districts are drawn. Civic organizations and members of the public are invited to participate in this webinar to learn about how citizens can influence where the lines are drawn. The presentation will also explain the effect of competitive districts on voters to increase voter turnout and ensure that legislators represent the broad interests of their constituents.
If your local neighborhood council or organization would like “Redistricting 101” presented to your group, the LWV has a Speakers Bureau available. Under COVID and limited resources, the slide-show presentation is only available via ZOOM. To arrange for a presentation, please contact Pat Purvis at wichitapurvis@gmail.com.
We look forward to your participation in this non-partisan civic education program. By having more people informed and involved we will help Montana’s Commission define house/senate state legislature maps that are fair and serve us all well.
Sincerely,
Nancy Leifer
