Springtime fun with Parks and Recreation

Join Missoula Parks and Recreation for Pickleball Palooza, Kids' Fishing Derby, Little Dipper Trail Run and much more. Learn more at the links below. Register online for all programs, phone 721-PARK (7275) or stop by Currents Aquatics Center in McCormick Park.

Kids and families

Parents’ Night Out at Currents • May 3, ages 7+

Enjoy your dinner date and explore First Friday art events without the kids in tow. Participants will play games, splash around the Currents pool and be treated to pizza for dinner. Ages 7+. $15 per child. Meets the first Friday of each month.

Pickleball Palooza • May 4, all ages

Meets 10am – 12pm at FMRP. Join us to celebrate of another great season of outdoor pickleball in Missoula! We’ll introduce the sport to beginners and play a fun round robin with experienced players. All equipment will be provided by Missoula Parks and Recreation. Best of all, Paloozas are FREE, so bring your friends and family.

Free! Folf in the Parks • Tuesdays through Oct. 22, all ages  

Join Parks and Recreation and the Garden City Flyers for a free, family-friendly round of disc golf on Tuesday evenings from 5 – 7 p.m. Never played before? We’ll help you learn the basics. Bring your own discs, or borrow ours. Meets May 7 at McCormick.

2019 Fishing Derby • Saturday, May 11, ages 3 - 14

Join us at Silver’s Lagoon in McCormick Park for our annual youth fishing derby from 9 to 11 a.m.. This event is geared for all abilities, and we’ll provide adaptive equipment so everyone can join in on the fun! A limited number of poles are available—please bring your own if you can. Great prizes donated by Bob Wards, Cabela's and Sportsman's Warehouse! Ages 12–14 need a FWP Conservation fishing license. $1 fee supports youth recreation.

Happy Mother’s Day! Moms swim free at Currents • May 12

Join us for Currents Aquatics Center open swim on Sunday, May 12, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., when moms accompanied by their children swim free!

Tiny Sprouts • Starting May 15, toddlers to age 3

Little ones, walking toddlers to age 3, will learn to play together with our soft and safe equipment. Parent participation is required. Five-week sessions meet Wednesdays or Fridays, 10:15 - 10:45am at MPR Sports & Wellness Center, 1515 Fairview Ave. The registration fee is $30/25 with CityCard resident discount.

Super Sprouts Sports Skills • May 17 – June 14, ages 3 – 5 

Budding sports stars will develop their coordination while having fun and learning about a variety of sports, balance and movement skills. Includes field trips and Strider bikes along with the classic sports kids love. Parent participation is welcome and encouraged! Meets Fridays, 11 - 11:45am, McCormick Park. The registration fee is $60/48 with CityCard resident discount. Summer sessions start at Bonner, McCormick, and FMRP on June 17.

Little Dipper Kids’ Trail Run slated for May 18

Parks and Recreation is partnering with the Big Dipper Trail Running Team and Run Wild Missoula for the annual Little Dipper Trail Run on Saturday, May 18 at 12 p.m. The event includes 1-k, 2-mile and 4-mile races for youth ages two and up.  The 1-k race is free, and registration for the 2-mile and 4-mile races is $15. Register at www.runwildmissoula.org. Registration includes race swag and Big Dipper ice cream for all.

Teens/Adults/Seniors

Teen Workreation • Apply by May 17, ages 13 - 16

Teens: Gain valuable work experience, have a blast and work outdoors...while volunteering with Parks and Recreation! Teens, ages 13 to 16*, can volunteer with Parks and Recreation to work with kids in their neighborhood parks this summer! If you are interested in getting on-the-job training in the Parks and Recreation field, we may have a volunteer position for you. Work with Parks and Recreation Staff as a Jr. Camp Leader, Jr. Lifeguard, Jr. Swim Instructor/WSI. Jr. Lifeguard and Jr. Swim Instructors can begin at age 12 after completing American Red Cross training programs offered at Splash Montana. Applications for Session 1 due by Friday, May 17. Session 2 applications due June 21.

Missoula Movers Coffee Walks • Mondays, for active adults

Enjoy the company of new friends on guided walks through Missoula’s conservation lands, parks, and trails. After the walk, enjoy a hot drink with fellow hikers! Meets Mondays at Currents, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Registration is $7 per walk. (Sorry, no CityCard discount.)

New! Seated Fitness With Missoula Senior Center • May 3 – July 28, adults

Join Parks & Recreation and the Senior Center for this fun new program! Whether you’re new to exercise, have decreased mobility, or are recovering from an illness or injury, Seated Fitness is a great way to build strength, mobility, stability and confidence. Remain seated while completing the gentle movements to lively, upbeat music. Suitable for any fitness level and can be adapted to the needs of individual participants. Wear comfortable clothing, bring water and be prepared to have to have a ball! No registration is required, drop in any time. Meets May 3 – July 28, Fridays, 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. or Sundays, 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Missoula Senior Center, 705 S. Higgins.  $3 suggested donation.

 Learn to Play Pickleball Level 1 Clinics • May 6, ages 12+

Parks and Recreation staff and/or Zoo Town Pickleball players teach you the basics of the game and get you ready to attend our Open Play sessions and/or League Play. All necessary equipment (paddles, balls, nets) will be available to use during the clinic. Pre-registration required, registration fee is $6 per session. Meets Mondays, 5:30 – 6:3- p.m. at FMRP. Next class May 20.

 Pilates in the Parks • Wednesdays, May 8 – Sept. 18, ages 12 and up 

Pilates is a series of low-impact exercises that emphasize proper postural alignment, core strength and muscle balance. Classes teach the basics of mat Pilates to all ages and abilities for ages 12 and up. Please bring your own mat if possible—a limited number of mats are available for use. Meets Wednesday, May 8 at Kiwanis Park, May 15 at Bonner Park. The suggested donation is $3 for adults, $1 for youth ages 18 and under.

Summer Adult Softball • Register by May 12, ages 14+

Co-rec novice and intermediate leagues at FMRP.  Eight-week officiated league, Tuesday and Wednesday evening games. Team fee is $400 on or before May 12, $425 after May 12 if space is available.

American Red Cross Lifeguarding and First Aid •  May 13-18, ages 15+

Get certified to lifeguard and work at Splash Montana or Currents! Meets at Currents. Course fee is $70.

Generations At Play • Thursdays, May 16 – Aug. 29, geared for ages 55+, all adults welcome

Join us Thursday evenings this summer for bike rides on local trails, stand up paddle boarding, and learn yoga, dance, kayaking, hiking and more.  Each week, Generations at Play will tackle a new adventure and learn more about what makes the Missoula valley so special. Transportation, equipment provided. Programs geared for adults 55 and up, but all adults are welcome. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged.

Yoga in the Parks • Tuesdays, May 14 through Sept. 17, ages 12 and up

Reduce stress while improving strength and flexibility. Classes explore yoga basics for all ages and abilities. Please bring your own equipment, if possible. A limited number of yoga mats, towels, and blocks are available for use each session. For ages 12 and up, meets Tuesday, May 14 at Kiwanis Park, May 21 at Greenough Park. The suggested donation is $3 for adults, $1 for youth ages 18 and under.

Memorial Rose Garden volunteer workday • May 18, ages 8 and up

Parks and Recreation and the Missoula Rose Society invite residents to volunteer in the Garden on May 18 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Working with experts from the Rose Society, volunteers will be mulching, weeding, planting and pruning roses. Volunteers may stay for the entire event, or drop by to help for a shorter period. Tools, gloves and refreshments will be provided. Email deckert@ci.missoula.mt.us to sign up.

Coming up in June

Men’s Lacrosse League • Register by June 2, ages 16+

Six-week officiated league, Wednesday evenings at FMRP. Register as an individual, Parks forms teams. Registation fee is $75 per player on or before June 2, $100 after if space is available.

Unplug and Play! Summer Kick-Off  • Sunday, June 9, all ages 

Unplug and Play! kicks off summer at Franklin Park and McLeod Park from 1 to 4 p.m.. These parks will be connected by a Sunday Streets Missoula route. You can walk, bike, roll, stroll between activities from Franklin to McLeod. Free.

Montana Sr. Olympics • June 13 – 15, 2019

Summer Camps and Bike Camps •  Weekly, June 17 – August 23, ages 4-15

Join us for a huge variety of full and half-day camps throughout the summer—there’s something for every interest. New this year, Discovery Camp offers day-by-day registration to allow you to sign up for just the days you need. Discovery Camp is based at McCormick Park with field trips and schedules produced weekly to keep your child moving and entertained all summer. Summer and Fall Tennis Lessons • Weekly, June 17 – Aug. 15, ages 5 to adult

Join our professional tennis staff to learn the basics or improve your game. Beginning to intermediate tennis lessons at Playfair Park for ages 5 and to adult. Classes meet weekly, June 17 to August 15, times, days, fees vary.

Weekend Adventures for Active Adults • June through Sept, geared for ages 55+, all adults welcome
