FMRP Phase 2 Grand Opening slated for July 26

Join us for Fort Missoula Regional Park’s Phase 2 Grand Opening celebration on Thursday, July 26, from 6 to 10 p.m.  The celebration features free family activities, live music, tours of the new park, games and sports, door prizes, plus food and beverages from the Home Plate Grill.  City and County officials will host a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Meadowlark Shelter at 6:30 p.m.

The event includes games, crafts, sports and activities for all ages. The Salamanders, a local all-ages rock band, will perform at the park’s Meadowlark Shelter from 7 to 9:30 p.m.  Families can tour the new park and playgrounds, play kickball and lawn games on the new softball diamonds, or try pickleball or tennis on the new courts. The Greens area of the park will feature bocce ball and horseshoes.

At 9 p.m., local band Yip!Yeah! will be performing a multi-media rock show in The Commons, a social gathering place and recreation area within the park.  Residents can take a self-guided tour of the park and receive a discount at the park’s Home Plate Grill concession stand.  Mac The Moose, the new park’s mascot, will lead a Mascot Parade around the park’s trail system at 7:15 p.m.
Residents may walk or bike to the Grand Opening via the Bitterroot Trail and the new pedestrian bridge on South Reserve St.  The public is invited to join the Missoula Bike Ambassadors for a group ride to the park departing from Currents Aquatics Center in McCormick Park at 5 p.m. Cyclist may also join the ride at the intersection of the Bitterroot Trail and Mary Av. when the group cycles through between 5:30 and 5:40 p.m.  

Parking is available at the park’s South Avenue and Fort Missoula Rd. lots, in the northwest corner of the Community Medical Center campus, and at Big Sky High School. On-street parking is not permitted on South Avenue or on Fort Missoula Road. Shuttles will be running from Big Sky High School to the park approximately every 15 minutes from 5:45 to 9:15 p.m.

Fort Missoula Regional Park is a joint City-County project, and is funded by the countywide 2014 Parks and Trails Bond. The voter-approved $42 million measure allocated $38 million for Fort Missoula Regional Park; $3 million for the Missoula County trails program, and $1 million for new and improved playgrounds throughout the City. Phase 1 of the park opened in 2017.

Phase 2 construction at Fort Missoula includes the Meadowlark Shelter, a 1500-sq. ft. timber and stone picnic/events shelter, Mac’s Playground, a fully-inclusive adaptive playground, seven softball diamonds, including 5 lighted fields, a full-service concession, The Greens picnic shelter and lawn games area, The Commons social recreation area, plus eight resurfaced tennis courts and 22 pickleball courts.  The park also includes an outdoor fitness center with nine workout stations, basketball courts, lawn volleyball, a preschool playground inside the softball complex, historical interpretation, plus trails, restrooms and parking.  Sgt. Bozo Dog Park is also part of Phase 2 construction and will open in late fall of this year.

The park’s grand opening is sponsored by Jackson Contractor Group, Inc., Knife River Corporation, Musco Sports Lighting, OZ Architects, and Axis Physical Therapy.  Radio sponsors include U104.5 FM and The Trail 103.3 FM.
