Madison Street Bridge Update, Week of May 29

Project update from the Montana Department of Transportation

For the duration of the Madison Street Bridge Rehabilitation Project, the general contractor, Frontier West, recommends using alternate routes and encourages drivers to plan additional travel time, especially from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., as there will be traffic delays on the bridge. Please obey all signage and flaggers and remember that fines do double in work zones. Crews will be in operation Monday through Friday from approximately 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For the week of May 29

Crews will not work on Monday, May 29, for the Memorial Day holiday. Bcyclists and pedestrians, please use the main bridge while the underbridge is closed.
Throughout the duration of the project, due to the deck being removed in the northbound lanes, there will be large openings in the bridge.  All pedestrians and cyclists are asked to not enter the work zone under any circumstances, day or night. Protective barriers will be installed to ensure that no debris falls from the bridge into the river or onto the trail system below.

If you’re attending high school graduation at the Adams Center on Saturday, June 3, remember to allow extra travel time.

Underbridge and Trail System

The pedestrian/bicycle underbridge below the Madison Street Bridge is closed for safety while crews remove and replace the bridge decking in the southbound lanes of the bridge directly above. Pedestrians and cyclists should watch for signs concerning the closure and detours and should not use the underbridge at any time during the closure. Use the nearby Van Buren Street walking bridge or the Higgins Avenue bridge. The bridge will reopen when the project is complete in August.

Water buoys have been set up in the Clark Fork River below the bridge to direct watercrafts and summertime tubers to opposite sides of the river for protection from the hazards of falling debris from the deck removal. Please do not enter the blocked sections of the river at any time.

Project Overview

On Nov. 21, work on the Madison Street Bridge support structures took place, and work is now underway on the bridge deck.

Headed by general contractor Frontier West, the primary goal of the Madison Street Bridge Rehabilitation is to fix the bridge’s failing bridge deck. In addition to bridge deck repairs, the project features structural, aesthetic and multi-modality improvements such as new lighting and railings, bike lanes, and expanded protected sidewalks. Work also includes repair of the bridge’s support structures. Construction launched in late November with improvements to pylons and other supporting structures under the bridge. The anticipated completion date of the Madison Street Bridge Rehabilitation is August 2017, weather permitting.
